BBC EU grants anger
February 10, 2012MEP Paul Nuttall has welcomed admissions by the BBC that it has pocketed almost £3million in EU grants since 2007.
“UKIP has long known that the Corporation was getting money from Brussels and it is good that it has now been forced into admitting the scale of this disgrace,” said Mr Nuttall, North West Euro-MP.
Details emerged following a Parliamentary Question by MP Karl McCartney and the BBC has also revealed its commercial arm BBC Worldwide has borrowed more than £141million from the European Investment Bank since 2003 – and £30million is still due to be repaid by the end of May this year.
“The old joke that the BBC is the Brussels Broadcasting Corporation may be true after all,” said Mr Nuttall, UKIP’s deputy leader.
“How on earth it show genuine impartiality on European matters while in receipt of EU funds? Everyone knows you don’t bite the hand that feeds you,” he said.
The Eurosceptic think-tank Global Britain has found that over the past six years just 0.04 per cent of coverage on Radio 4’s Today programme was devoted to the potential benefits of withdrawing from the EU.
“This would seem to back up worries about the Corporation’s impartiality and smacks of EU propaganda. This is not how an independent public service broadcaster should be behaving,” added Mr Nuttall.
Job losses lamented
February 7, 2012Local MEP Paul Nuttall has lamented proposed job losses at Pilkingtons glass factory in St Helens.
It is feared 150 jobs will go under plans to axe 3,500 jobs worldwide by Nippon Sheet Glass, which owns Pilkingtons.
“This is particularly bad news for the town, which has seen its fair share of disappearing jobs. UK unemployment rose by 118,000 in the three months to November to 2.685 million, the highest level since summer 1994.
“The Coalition government needs to do much more to help the economy grow and could start by stopping spending billions on foreign aid to countries such as India. Particularly as it has now been revealed that Indian ministers have told our government it does not require such aid,” said Mr Nuttall.
“The other blindingly obvious way is for the UK to withdraw from the fiasco which is the European Union and which costs us £50 million a day.
EU sports takeover bid
February 5, 2012Following a controversial vote in favour of British sports stars wearing the EU flag on their kit, local MEP Paul Nuttall has reacted angrily to the plan.
Mr Nuttall, a former footballer with Tranmere Rovers, asked, “Are we now going to see the EU flag at the British Olympics or at the Champions League final or even on the shirt of the England captain?
“This is nothing more than sheer EU propaganda and vanity. The EU has never been so unpopular but here they are wanting to stamp their flag on sporting stars in the hope they can force the people to love them – but they won’t.’’
“I think this move breaks the ban on sports bodies’ using political slogans on sports kit – because the EU is in effect a political organisation.
“Athletes proudly wear the flag of their own national countries. They should not wear the flag of the European Union,” said Mr Nuttall, UKIP deputy leader.
“This absurd proposal is little more than propaganda but it clearly shows how far the unelected mob in Brussels is prepared to go in order to interfere with every area of our lives.
“A nation’s football, cricket or rugby team should only display their national flag, not an EU symbol representing an unaccountable and increasingly unwanted superstate.’’
The proposal is now to go to the European Commission to consider how to draw up legislation to put before member states for approval.
“There is no way that our Government can go along with this plan, they must put their foot down firmly and kick this idea into touch,” said Mr Nuttall.
