Crime Report Welcomed

June 25, 2012

A university report showing that poverty does not cause crime has been welcomed by local MEP Paul Nuttall.

The research by Cambridge University – the most comprehensive study of youth crime in Europe – reveals that morality is the cause.

“I think this report showing that a lack of moral compass, rather than other factors, is to blame for crime is spot on.

“The crime situation we have is a result of an over-generous welfare state which has created a society with a ‘something for nothing’ attitude,” said Mr Nuttall, UKIP Deputy Leader.

“If poverty caused crime it would have risen in the 1930′s, the most impoverished decade in the UK, but in fact it fell. At that time there was a far stronger community spirit and important family bonds.

“It is absolutely vital that young people have a strict moral code and as well as knowing right from wrong have the moral backbone to avoid committing crime.

“Parents must show a good example to their offspring backed up by a first class education system reinforcing morality. It is crucial for a safe and secure society,” said Mr Nuttall.
